What one thing do I really need for fall??

Tonne 2

Tonne Goodman style editor of Vogue!

This is my NEW addition to my uniform for fall!  PANTS!!!

I love that Marsha…….can inspire us to write on a “topic”; and I  cannot wait to read them all!

Mine is a bit weird!  (no surprise!!)

My goal for fall is a “new uniform”!

I love, love love uniforms.  For the past  14 years……

it has remained the same……a white crew neck tee shirt;  with either a “white gauze”  long skirt….with a brown belt……or a white tee shirt and a Black long gauze skirt…….I bought  them all……I am afraid!!!  (the skirts)!!!  I bought them “out”!!

I started with one long white skirt…..bought 15 years ago…….here in Santa Barbara……I bought 4 of the same skirt.

Then;  as they started to wear out…..I had them copied…….and got 4 more.  Then;  I discovered the “double layer gauze one” and bought 7 in white…..7 in black.  Then two years later….seven more in white…..seven more in black.  I have the exact same belt…..brown and black.

Every year……7 black……7 white……every day……..I always felt great in them!

Two separate times…….magazines (thank you Lord!!) came to photograph our house!

(it never occurred to me…..nor, I think to the magazines….to  photograph “me”!!!)

One :  (Traditional Home in 2003, I think)  And another “Santa Barbara Magazine” in 2008) I had on the identical outfit!

Same tee shirt (petite bateau);  same long white skirt….same brown belt;  same brown sandals…….

5 years apart!  This year……2014;  same uniform!  Same belt….same tee shirt……(increasingly hard to find) same…..same….

Some people find this strange……I find it so wonderful……and easy.  I deal as a decorator with color; print, all of it

all day with client’s houses!  Unfortunately……I had a closet full of other things!

(my cousin…..a true “fashionista” said……”what the hell is wrong with you?  Don’t you have any other

clothes???”

mein the trees

Santa Barbara Magazine  “Penny’s Roost”!

me in the same outfit

Traditional Home magazine….”Provence on the Pacific”

So.  My need for fall?  Adding to my “uniform”!

Not deleting the skirts…….(although ;  as you can imagine….many have completely “worn out”!   They are not made anymore….some still

are OK…..perhaps have a year or two left)

I read a blog by my friend Tracey Jackson…..(who has written with her friend the songwriter  Paul Williams a wonderful book….”Gratitude and Trust” do read it.  it is life-altering…I mean it.)

She wrote about “keep it simple”  and a uniform…..and as an example:  she said:

“A lot of ink has been given to Vogue fashion editor Tonne Goodman.  She is also known for white jeans, though she also wears black ones. She tends to pair them with black or white tops.  I love the way it looks. I was reading a piece on her and she said she could go off to fashion week in Paris with just a carryon. I was envious.”

Tonne Goodman has won numerous fashion awards.  She wears a “uniform”.  Here is her story about her
uniform!

http://jeanstories.com/the-stories/tonne-goodman-tells-it-straight-leg/

So I am adding as my “must have” for fall…..straight leg white jeans……straight leg black jeans;  I am trying to find more “petit bateau” white tee shirts;  a few more black and navy classic blazers…..and the main thing I am doing is

“getting rid” of just about everything else in my closet.

I went for 3 semesters in the end of high school to a Catholic school……I thought the nuns were the

penultimate “elegantly” dressed people.

Perhaps I am emulating them!

“HIGH-RISE WHITE  AND BLACK STRAIGHT LEG JEANS”

NAVY AND BLACK CASHMERE TURTLENECKS

ONLY COLOR IN A FEW ACCESSORIES!!

SIMPLICITY IN MY CLOSET!  MY GOAL FOR FALL!!!

tonnne 1

(Tonne Goodman packed for a week in Paris in a carry on!!!)

and I will be able to pack for any trip anywhere in a carryon……

Away we go!

ps she won the “Eleanor Lambert Award”

(she was one of my very favorites!)

    Dear Penny,

I was amazed when I saw your post come up! Believe it or not, I have a closet full of great clothes;however what I need to add is just what you are getting to complete your look. I need both a well fitting and comfortable pair of black and winter white pants! I stocked up on turtlenecks, (thin, fitted) the last couple of years and have plenty of classic jackets and accessories.

    Have a great week!

I think your wardrobe looks extremely chic, simple is good!!

How refreshing for a fashion editor to be able to travel, if necessary with just a carry on!

I love white jeans too 🙂

I enjoyed visiting your blog, thank you to Marsha!

Priceless, we read the same articles on line?

Thought the same thing about Tonne Goodman & uniform, except how to get my legs longer.

Wore blue jeans/white t-shirt for decades until ‘the change’. Now, linen.

Long linen dresses or skirts. Keeps the mosquitoes off. On cooler days or breezy days I wear a short canvas skirt with long linen top. Long sleeves too, am outside all all all the time.

Colors are mostly solids, few prints.

Have zero desire to put my brain onto wardrobe each day. Much more fun to design beautiful easy landscapes. Wellies are always in the back of my van. In winter, 2 types of extra jackets for changes thru the day in temps.

Sometimes the padded, long denim jacket is quite caked with mud/debris before I notice.

Can’t wait to see the new magazine shoots……with you in your new uniform.

I think you look terrific, and it isn’t so easy to pull off the white pants and white gauzy skirts. (Some of us cannot, period.)

I smiled reading the way you bought “in bulk.” That tells me you truly know your style, and want to make sure you continue to have access.

I used to do exactly the same thing when it came it shoes. (Really.) As I used to wear my 3″ heels for a good 10 hours a day (in my corporate life), not only did I want them beautiful, I wanted the comfortable. So when I found a style that was both – I bought every color they had (and two in black).

I just love your look – so you, but a shake up very now and then is good. I went shopping this past weekend and must have tried on 25 pairs of pants trying to find the perfect pair, then I was going to buy lots of them…still on the hunt…

Hilarious about the same outfit over time.

But I find as a designer myself, that I really have to wear only black or white (or a combination) because otherwise it gets muddled up with my designs for different projects.

Luckily I live in a city (Melbourne) which is famous for wearing black, so there’s plenty to choose from in the boutiques!

I love your “uniform” and you rock it – so who can complain about that?

Penny I think your style is classic chic. I too am a big fan of black and white. I can’t tell you how many black pants I own. They are part of my “uniform”
Please keep those wonderful posts coming! Would love to see the progress of your daughter’s home!

I think this is an ingenious way to dress! I love it. My uniform changes very little, year to year. It’s predominantly black, with flashes of white and an occasional snippet of color. Adding pants will be a perfect addition to your chic wardrobe.

    What lovely comments! so many people find it “boring and unimaginative”;

Tara Dillard (the landscape queen) understands that in a business which requires constant color and pattern decisions..

Having a “uniform” truly makes sense!

and, honestly, to this day; I have never seen more “elegantly dressed” people than the “Holy Child Nuns” who rescued me…..in the last 3 semesters in high school!

Exquisite; always…….they changed my life in so many ways! (in only 3 semesters!!!)

Thank you for your lovely comments!

Penny, I loved this and am a great admirer of Tonne Goodman’s style. Recently, I had to stay two extra weeks during a visit to the States due to the Air France strike and clothing wise I was just fine as I had only packed my basics of black bottom, white top. I think that I am going to break down and do a thorough closet cleaning soon…thanks for the inspiration!

Penelope, I applaud you! You look fantastic, and your “uniform” suits you to a TEE. It seems beautifully inspired by your aesthetic. I have lots of clothes, and find I am happiest in the same things over and over. It would be easy to whittle down the wardrobe-something I must seriously consider. I have increasingly found blue-black-and white hanging in the closet, so I might be well on my way. Carry ON! pgt

Did you know that Babe Paley only wore black or white?
I simply love your look. I mean it, I love it! It is beautifully perfect for ANYTHING, ANYWHERE, ANYTIME.
And, that’s what a well-dressed woman is all about, isn’t it? You are divine in every single way, Penelope. You have me feeding wild rabbits, and thinking of putting in a garden for the 1st time in my life and, guess what, I have an orchid that is RE-BLOOMING for me.

PS. I followed through today and did that closet cleaning, getting rid of things once and for all that well-meaning family have given me but that just isn’t me. It will make someone else happy. 🙂
And I forgot to add that you look great in your uniform. So elegant and natural at the same time. “If it ain’t broke…”

What a great look. I have admired you in photos but never realized it was a uniform. Then I read the Tonne Goodman story and I was convinced My next purchase will be whit jeans. I must admit I prefer white or grey tops so your look fits perfectly. Loed your piece and the link.

You are adorable. We have to meet! I have a friend here in Montecito who has been “best friends” for real with Yvette Mimieux…..for their whole lives! I sent her the link to your blog post….and she called Yvette; I ran into her a couple of days later…..”Yvette wants nothing to do with the computer…..my friend Trish said..”don’t be silly…..this is a trip you went on when we were kids!!! You have to see it!!!”

Trish told me “I am sure her secretary will show it to her…..she is averse to computers”!!

I think this is one great beauty of the internet…and I think we will hear more….. my friend Trish was on her way on a month-long trip to Sri Lanka, Hong Kong and Bangkok…it makes me tired to hear about it!

I am trying to expand my uniform with white jeans a la Tonne Goodman……haven’t found the white jeans that are as flattering as the white skirt yet!
Just yesterday; I was touring my friends around Santa Barbara in my exact “uniform” and these ladies stopped me in the middle of the Biltmore….and said……”oh! We love your outfit! You look like you just stepped out of a magazine!!!”

I may just stay in that uniform all the way into the nursing home……(Oh, I would like to skip that part!!!)
